Day 1 on the Reliability Engineer path.

What a Reliability Engineer does

Improves how long products and systems last by finding failure causes, testing fixes, and tracking uptime for users and operations teams.

  • Analyze failures using logs, test data, and returned parts to find root causes
  • Plan reliability tests to check lifetime, wear, and performance under stress
  • Build reliability models to predict failure rates and maintenance needs
  • Review designs for weak points and suggest changes to reduce risk
  • Create monitoring metrics and alerts to catch issues early in the field
  • Coordinate with manufacturing to improve process controls and reduce defects
  • Write clear reports and teach teams how to prevent repeat failures

A day in the life

  1. Review overnight alerts, field issues, and test results to spot new risks
  2. Meet with design and manufacturing to agree on fixes and test plans
  3. Run or review stress tests and update reliability predictions and dashboards
  4. Document findings, update failure tracking, and share next steps with teams

Tools you will use

Spreadsheets: Excel, Google SheetsData analysis: Python, RDatabases: SQLReliability methods: FMEA, Weibull analysisIssue tracking: Jira, Azure DevOpsDashboards: Power BI, TableauLab testing: environmental chambers, vibration testing
