Day 1 on the Materials Testing Engineer path.

What a Materials Testing Engineer does

Tests materials and parts for manufacturers to prove they meet strength, fatigue, and safety requirements before release.

  • Plan test programs based on drawings, standards, and risk areas
  • Prepare samples and fixtures for tensile, fatigue, impact, and hardness tests
  • Run lab tests, record results, and spot abnormal behavior or failures
  • Analyze data to estimate life, safety margins, and likely failure causes
  • Write clear test reports with methods, results, and pass fail decisions
  • Work with design and manufacturing teams to fix material or process issues
  • Maintain test equipment calibration, safety checks, and lab procedures

A day in the life

  1. Review test requests, specs, and acceptance limits for new parts
  2. Set up machines, run tests, and log data while monitoring for failures
  3. Meet with engineers to explain results and agree next test steps
  4. Document findings, update trackers, and file reports for audits
  5. Plan upcoming work and order consumables like grips and extensometers

Tools you will use

Test machines: tensile, compression, fatigue framesMeasurement: strain gauges, extensometers, calipers, micromsMicroscopy: optical microscope, SEM basicsHardness testing: Rockwell, Vickers, BrinellData analysis: Excel, PythonCAD review: SolidWorks, AutoCADStandards: ASTM, ISO
