Day 1 on the Plant Engineer path.

What a Plant Engineer does

Keeps a factory running safely and efficiently by improving equipment, utilities, and maintenance plans to reduce downtime and costs.

  • Diagnose equipment failures and remove root causes to prevent repeat downtime
  • Plan and deliver reliability upgrades for pumps, motors, conveyors, and compressors
  • Coordinate maintenance shutdowns, permits, and contractor work to meet safety rules
  • Improve utilities like steam, compressed air, water, and power for stable production
  • Review production losses and propose fixes using data from logs and sensors
  • Write and update maintenance standards, spare parts lists, and work instructions
  • Support safety and compliance audits by documenting risks and corrective actions

A day in the life

  1. Walk the plant floor, check critical assets, and follow up on overnight issues
  2. Meet with operations and maintenance to set priorities for the day and week
  3. Troubleshoot a breakdown, then document the fix and update the prevention plan
  4. Review work orders, parts usage, and downtime data to spot recurring problems
  5. Coordinate a small project and confirm it is safe, tested, and handed over
