Day 1 on the Calibration Engineer path.

What a Calibration Engineer does

Keeps measurement tools accurate by planning, performing, and documenting calibrations so products, labs, and plants can trust their data.

  • Plan calibration schedules for instruments, sensors, and test equipment
  • Perform calibrations using standards, fixtures, and reference devices
  • Diagnose measurement errors and trace issues to tools, setup, or process
  • Document results, certificates, and traceability records for audits
  • Coordinate repairs, replacements, and vendor calibrations when needed
  • Improve procedures to reduce downtime and measurement uncertainty
  • Train technicians and engineers on correct instrument use and care

A day in the life

  1. Review the calibration queue and prioritize items needed for production or testing
  2. Calibrate a set of tools, record results, and label equipment status
  3. Investigate an out-of-tolerance result and decide retest, repair, or quarantine
  4. Meet with quality and production to plan downtime and audit readiness

Tools you will use

Metrology equipment: calipers, micrometers, gauge blocksElectrical test gear: multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal calCalibration software: asset tracking, certificate managementSpreadsheets: Excel, Google SheetsStandards and procedures: ISO 17025, SOPsData analysis: basic statistics, control charts
