Day 1 on the Nondestructive Testing Engineer path.

What a Nondestructive Testing Engineer does

Checks parts and structures for hidden cracks or flaws using safe tests, helping teams prevent failures and meet quality rules.

  • Design inspection plans for welds, castings, composites, and critical parts
  • Set up and run tests like ultrasonic, radiographic, dye penetrant, and eddy current
  • Interpret signals and images to find defects and judge severity against standards
  • Write clear inspection reports with evidence, measurements, and pass fail decisions
  • Work with manufacturing and maintenance teams to fix root causes and prevent repeats
  • Calibrate equipment and verify procedures to keep results accurate and repeatable
  • Support audits and compliance by maintaining records and traceability

A day in the life

  1. Review drawings, specs, and acceptance criteria before going to the shop or site
  2. Perform inspections, capture data, and mark locations for repair or recheck
  3. Meet with engineers and technicians to explain findings and next steps
  4. Document results, update logs, and prepare reports for quality and customers

Tools you will use

NDT methods: ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, dye-1Inspection equipment: ultrasonic flaw detector, thickness g1Imaging: digital radiography, computed radiography, X-ray f1Calibration: reference blocks, step wedges, penetrametersDocumentation: spreadsheets, inspection reports, photo logsStandards: ASTM, ISO, ASME
