Day 1 on the Metrology Engineer path.

What a Metrology Engineer does

Develops measurement methods and inspection setups so manufacturing teams can prove parts meet specs and quality targets.

  • Design measurement plans for critical dimensions and tolerances
  • Select and qualify gauges, fixtures, and sensors for inspection
  • Program and run CMM and other measurement equipment
  • Analyze measurement data to find variation and root causes
  • Calibrate instruments and manage traceability to standards
  • Write clear work instructions and inspection reports
  • Support production and suppliers during quality investigations

A day in the life

  1. Review drawings and decide how to measure new or changed parts
  2. Run CMM or bench measurements and check results vs tolerances
  3. Meet with quality and manufacturing to resolve measurement issues
  4. Update gauge calibration records and improve inspection methods

Tools you will use

Metrology equipment: CMM, micrometers, calipers, height gageOptical measurement: vision systems, optical comparatorData analysis: Excel, MinitabCAD and drawings: GD&T callouts, 2D printsQuality methods: MSA, Gage R&RDocumentation: SOPs, inspection reports
