Day 1 on the Manufacturing Engineer path.

What a Manufacturing Engineer does

Improve how products are built by designing processes, tools, and work steps so factories make quality parts safely, on time, and at lower cost.

  • Design production processes, work instructions, and line layouts for new or changed products
  • Create and improve tooling, fixtures, and jigs to make work faster and more consistent
  • Analyze defects and downtime to find root causes and prevent repeat issues
  • Set process parameters and run trials to prove quality, cycle time, and safety targets
  • Coordinate with design, quality, and maintenance teams to launch changes smoothly
  • Plan capacity and balance work across stations to meet demand and takt time
  • Train operators on new methods and update standard work and visual guides

A day in the life

  1. Walk the line to spot bottlenecks, safety risks, and quality issues from the last shift
  2. Review production data, scrap reports, and downtime logs; pick top problems to attack
  3. Run a small test on the floor, measure results, and adjust the process settings
  4. Meet with quality and design to approve a change and update drawings and instructions
  5. Document the change, train operators, and track results for the next few days

  • Apprenticeship or work-based training in machining, assembly, or industrial maintenance plus courses
  • Short courses in Lean Six Sigma, quality, and production systems with a project portfolio

How people get their first job

  • Apply for factory internships or co-op roles in process engineering or production support
  • Start in production technician or quality technician roles and take on improvement projects
  • Build a portfolio with time studies, process maps, and before-after metrics from a small line
  • Earn a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt or Green Belt and practice on real problems
  • Volunteer for new product introduction tasks like line setup, trials, and work instructions
