Day 1 on the Robotics Engineer path.

What a Robotics Engineer does

Designs and tests robots for companies and labs so machines can sense, move, and do tasks safely and reliably.

  • Design robot mechanisms, sensors, and control systems to meet real-world requirements
  • Build prototypes and integrate motors, sensors, wiring, and embedded computers
  • Write and test software for perception, planning, and motion control
  • Tune controllers and calibrate sensors to improve accuracy and stability
  • Run experiments, collect logs, and analyze failures to find root causes
  • Create safety features, interlocks, and test plans for risky motions
  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to ship updates
  • Document designs, test results, and maintenance steps for others to use

A day in the life

  1. Review test logs, pick top issues, and plan experiments for the day
  2. Work at the bench: wire sensors, flash firmware, and run motion tests
  3. Meet with teammates to align on requirements, risks, and next build steps
  4. Debug a failure by reproducing it, changing one variable, and retesting
  5. Write notes and update drawings, code reviews, and test reports
