Day 1 on the Electrical Engineer path.

What a Electrical Engineer does

Designs, tests, and improves electrical systems for products and infrastructure so they work safely, reliably, and efficiently.

  • Design circuits, wiring, and power distribution for devices, buildings, or machines
  • Create schematics and electrical drawings that others can build and maintain
  • Analyze requirements and choose components that meet cost, safety, and performance needs
  • Build prototypes and run lab tests to verify performance and find faults
  • Debug electrical issues using measurements, logs, and step-by-step troubleshooting
  • Coordinate with mechanical, software, and manufacturing teams to integrate systems
  • Document designs, test results, and changes for quality and compliance
  • Support production or field teams by diagnosing failures and proposing fixes

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements, risks, and test results, then plan the next design steps
  2. Work in CAD and simulation tools to update schematics and validate changes
  3. Build or modify a prototype, then measure signals and power in the lab
  4. Meet with cross-functional teammates to resolve issues and align on timelines
  5. Write short reports and update documentation so others can reproduce the work

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Bachelor degree in electrical engineering or related engineering field
  • Diploma or associate degree in electrical engineering technology with strong lab work
  • Apprenticeship style training plus part-time study for power or industrial roles
  • Online courses and certificates in circuits, embedded systems, and power electronics

How people get their first job

  • Apply for internships or co-op placements in electronics, power, or controls teams
  • Start as a technician or engineering technologist and take on design tasks over time
  • Build a small portfolio of schematics, test reports, and code from personal projects
  • Earn safety and standards awareness certificates relevant to your region
  • Join a student engineering club and ship a working hardware project
