Day 1 on the Photonics Engineer path.

What a Photonics Engineer does

Designs and tests light-based parts and systems so products can communicate, sense, or measure accurately and reliably.

  • Design optical components like lenses, waveguides, and laser paths for a target performance
  • Model and simulate light behavior to predict losses, noise, and alignment sensitivity
  • Build and run lab tests using lasers, detectors, and measurement equipment
  • Analyze test data and troubleshoot issues like drift, heating, and signal distortion
  • Work with electrical and mechanical teams to integrate optics into full devices
  • Write test plans, document results, and support quality and safety requirements
  • Improve designs for manufacturability, cost, and long-term reliability

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements, then update an optical model and share expected performance
  2. Set up a bench test, align optics, and capture measurements from instruments
  3. Meet with teammates to resolve integration issues and agree on next experiments
  4. Document results, update drawings, and plan the next test run or prototype build

Tools you will use

Optical simulation: Zemax OpticStudio, COMSOL MultiphysicsProgramming: Python, MATLABLab instruments: optical power meter, oscilloscopeOptics lab gear: optical table, mountsDesign files: CAD, technical drawingsData tools: Jupyter Notebook, spreadsheets
