Day 1 on the PCB Design Engineer path.

What a PCB Design Engineer does

Designs printed circuit boards for electronic products, turning circuit needs into layouts that can be built, tested, and produced reliably.

  • Design PCB layouts from schematics, constraints, and mechanical outlines
  • Place components and route signals for performance, safety, and cost
  • Run design checks for spacing, connectivity, and manufacturing rules
  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and firmware teams on changes
  • Create fabrication and assembly files for board manufacturing
  • Review prototypes, diagnose issues, and update the layout for fixes
  • Support production by answering factory questions and resolving defects

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements, stackup notes, and open issues from the last build
  2. Do focused layout work: placement, routing, and design rule checks
  3. Meet with teammates to resolve constraints and approve design changes
  4. Generate outputs and document decisions for prototype or production runs

Tools you will use

PCB CAD: Altium Designer, KiCad, OrCADSimulation: SPICE, signal integrity toolsDocumentation: Git, ConfluenceTest equipment: oscilloscope, multimeterData exchange: Gerber, ODB++, IPC-2581Review methods: design rule checks, peer reviews

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Bachelors degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or similar
  • Diploma or associate degree in electronics engineering technology
  • Focused training in PCB layout through short courses plus a portfolio
  • Hands-on lab projects and maker experience combined with mentoring

How people get their first job

  • Apply for electronics or hardware engineering internships with layout tasks
  • Start as an electronics technician and take on PCB documentation and ECOs
  • Build a small PCB portfolio and share design files and bring-up notes
  • Earn a basic IPC awareness certificate and learn common fab rules
  • Contribute to open hardware projects that need board revisions

What AI does

Autorouters finish the easy nets. Altium has one. KiCad barely does.

Still yours

Fast, tight and high-speed nets are still routed by hand.
