Day 1 on the Battery Engineer path.

What a Battery Engineer does

Designs and tests battery cells and packs for products like vehicles and devices to improve safety, range, cost, and lifetime.

  • Design battery cells, modules, and packs to meet energy, power, size, and cost targets
  • Plan and run lab tests for capacity, fast charge, aging, vibration, and abuse safety
  • Analyze test data to find failure causes and improve performance and lifetime
  • Define requirements for battery management systems and safety protections
  • Build prototypes and support pilot builds with manufacturing and quality teams
  • Create test plans, reports, and clear documentation for design decisions
  • Work with suppliers on materials, components, and incoming quality checks

A day in the life

  1. Review test results and decide next experiments or design changes
  2. Meet with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to align pack interfaces
  3. Set up or supervise lab tests, then log data and check for anomalies
  4. Write reports and update requirements, drawings, and risk assessments

Tools you will use

Data analysis: Python, MATLABSpreadsheets: Excel, Google SheetsLab equipment: cyclers, environmental chambersElectronics test: multimeters, oscilloscopesCAD: SolidWorks, CATIAQuality methods: FMEA, 8D
