Day 1 on the Computer Hardware Engineer path.

What a Computer Hardware Engineer does

Designs and tests computer parts and circuit boards so devices run fast, use less power, and stay reliable in real use.

  • Design circuit boards and choose components to meet speed, power, and cost targets
  • Create schematics and layouts, then review designs for signal and power integrity
  • Build prototypes, bring up boards, and debug issues with lab equipment
  • Write and run test plans for performance, thermal, and reliability checks
  • Work with firmware and software teams to validate drivers and interfaces
  • Coordinate with manufacturing to improve yield, test coverage, and repairability
  • Document designs, test results, and changes for future builds and audits

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements, risks, and open bugs with the team in a short sync
  2. Spend focused time on schematics, layout reviews, or simulation results
  3. In the lab, probe signals, measure power, and reproduce failures on prototypes
  4. Write up findings, update tickets, and plan next tests with partners
