Day 1 on the FPGA Engineer path.

What a FPGA Engineer does

Builds and tests digital circuits inside programmable chips so products can process signals fast and reliably in real-world systems.

  • Design hardware logic for features like data capture, filtering, and control
  • Write and review HDL code and run simulations to verify behavior
  • Integrate FPGA logic with CPUs, sensors, memory, and high-speed interfaces
  • Debug timing, resets, and clocking issues using lab measurements and logs
  • Optimize for speed, power, and resource use to meet product limits
  • Create testbenches, automated checks, and regression test runs
  • Document designs and coordinate reviews with hardware and software teams

A day in the life

  1. Plan tasks, review requirements, and break work into testable blocks
  2. Code HDL, run simulations, and fix failing tests or timing warnings
  3. Meet with hardware and software teammates to align interfaces and bring-up steps
  4. In the lab, load bitstreams, probe signals, and reproduce tricky bugs
  5. Write notes, update tickets, and prepare for design reviews

Tools you will use

HDL languages: Verilog, VHDL, SystemVerilogFPGA toolchains: synthesis, place and route, timing reportsSimulation: ModelSim, QuestaSim, Vivado SimulatorVersion control: GitLab equipment: oscilloscope, logic analyzerDebug interfaces: JTAG, UARTScripting: Python, Tcl
