Day 1 on the Digital Design Engineer path.

What a Digital Design Engineer does

Designs and tests digital logic for electronic devices so hardware works reliably, fast, and within power and cost limits.

  • Design digital logic blocks for chips, boards, or embedded systems
  • Write and review hardware description code for digital circuits
  • Simulate and verify designs to catch bugs before hardware is built
  • Define interfaces between logic, firmware, and external components
  • Debug timing, reset, and data issues in lab and in simulation
  • Document requirements, design choices, and test results for others
  • Coordinate with PCB, firmware, and test teams to integrate designs

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements, bug reports, and priorities with the team
  2. Implement a logic change and run simulations and automated checks
  3. Join design reviews to explain tradeoffs in speed, area, and power
  4. Debug a failing test using waveforms, logs, and lab instruments

Tools you will use

HDL languages: Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDLSimulation: ModelSim, Questa, XceliumFPGA tools: Vivado, QuartusVersion control: GitLab equipment: oscilloscope, logic analyzerScripting: Python, Tcl
