Day 1 on the Control Systems Engineer path.

What a Control Systems Engineer does

Designs and tunes feedback control software so machines and processes run smoothly, accurately, and safely in real-world conditions.

  • Design control strategies for motors, robots, vehicles, and industrial processes
  • Model system behavior and choose sensors and actuators to meet performance goals
  • Tune controllers and filters to reduce overshoot, noise, and instability
  • Build simulations and run experiments to validate control performance
  • Write and review embedded or real-time control code and test it on hardware
  • Diagnose oscillations, drift, and faults using logs, plots, and test data
  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams on requirements and safety
  • Document control designs, test results, and calibration settings for release

A day in the life

  1. Review test logs, plots, and bug reports to pick the top control issues to fix
  2. Run simulations, then adjust gains and limits and re-test on a bench or rig
  3. Meet with cross-team partners to align on requirements, sensors, and safety limits
  4. Do a controlled field test, capture data, and write a short results summary
  5. Push code changes, update calibration files, and plan the next test cycle
