Day 1 on the Tool and Die Maker path.

What a Tool and Die Maker does

Builds, repairs, and tests precision tools and dies so factories can make parts accurately, safely, and on time.

  • Interpret part drawings and tolerances to plan tool and die work
  • Machine metal parts using manual and CNC equipment to tight specs
  • Assemble, fit, and adjust dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures
  • Troubleshoot tool wear, breakage, and part defects during production
  • Measure and inspect parts using precision gauges and metrology tools
  • Heat treat, grind, and finish surfaces to improve hardness and accuracy
  • Document changes and coordinate with engineers, operators, and quality teams

A day in the life

  1. Review job tickets, drawings, and priorities with the shop team
  2. Set up machines, cut parts, and check dimensions during each step
  3. Assemble and try out a die, then adjust until parts meet tolerance
  4. Respond to urgent production issues and repair tools to reduce downtime
  5. Record measurements and hand off updates to quality and production
