What a Millwright does

Installs, aligns, and repairs industrial machines for factories and plants so equipment runs safely and reliably.

  • Install and align machines using precision measuring tools
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and plan safe repair steps
  • Repair or replace bearings, gears, belts, chains, and seals
  • Read drawings and manuals to set up equipment correctly
  • Rig and move heavy parts with hoists, jacks, and slings
  • Lubricate, adjust, and test machines after maintenance
  • Document work, parts used, and follow-up checks
  • Coordinate shutdown work with operators and other trades

A day in the life

  1. Review work orders, safety risks, and lockout steps before starting
  2. Inspect equipment, measure alignment, and confirm the root cause
  3. Remove guards, disassemble parts, and repair or replace components
  4. Reassemble, align, and run test checks with the operator
  5. Log results, clean the area, and plan the next maintenance task
