Day 1 on the Robotic Welding Cell Technician path.

What a Robotic Welding Cell Technician does

Run and tune robot welding cells so factories can join metal parts fast, safely, and to a steady standard. Welding rules and certificates differ by country, such as AWS (American Welding Society) standards in the US and EN ISO 9606 weld tests in the EU and UK.

  • Set up robot welding cells with the right wire, gas, and fixtures
  • Program weld paths on the teach pendant, the robot's handheld controller
  • Load parts, run cycles, and watch the cell weld safely
  • Tune weld settings like wire speed, voltage, and travel speed
  • Inspect welds for defects and adjust the program to fix faults
  • Run cobots (collaborative robots that work next to people) on smaller jobs
  • Clear faults, swap worn tips, and keep the cell running
  • Record weld results and follow quality and safety rules

A day in the life

  1. Check the schedule, fixtures, and safety guards before powering the cell
  2. Load the right program, run a first part, and get it inspected
  3. Run parts in batches while watching arc, spatter, and cycle time
  4. Tweak weld settings or robot paths when welds drift off target
  5. Clear alarms, change contact tips, and clean nozzles as needed
  6. Log weld data, label parts, and hand off to the next step

Tools you will use

Welding robots: ABB, FANUC, Path Robotics, YaskawaWelding processes: MIG, TIG, flux-coredProgramming: teach pendant, offline simulation softwareInspection tools: weld gauges, calipers, visual checksHand tools: pliers, wire cutters, contact tip wrenchesPPE: welding helmet, gloves, fire-safe clothingQuality docs: weld procedure sheets, job travelers

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Vocational or technical school certificate in welding
  • Diploma or associate degree in robotics or automation technology
  • Apprenticeship with a fabrication shop that runs robot cells
  • On the job training in robot welding and weld inspection
  • Short courses from robot makers like FANUC or ABB

How people get their first job

  • Start as a manual welder, then ask to train on the robot cell
  • Apply for robot welding operator or automation helper roles
  • Join a UK or EU apprenticeship and earn an EN ISO 9606 weld test
  • In the US, earn an AWS welding certificate and a robot operator course
  • Build a portfolio with photos of weld coupons and a simple robot path plan
  • Take a free robot teach pendant tutorial from a maker like FANUC
