Day 1 on the Cleanroom High-Purity Welder path.

What a Cleanroom High-Purity Welder does

Join ultra-high-purity (UHP) process piping inside cleanrooms (dust-free rooms with filtered air) so chip and drug plants run with no contamination. Welding codes and qualifications differ by country, so the work follows region-specific standards such as American Welding Society (AWS) rules in the US or EN ISO 9606 in Europe.

  • Prep and clean stainless steel and exotic-alloy pipe to remove all contamination
  • Purge pipe interiors with inert gas so the weld stays oxide-free inside
  • Run orbital welding (a machine that rotates the torch around the pipe) on joints
  • Hand-weld tight spots using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), also called TIG
  • Tune orbital weld-head settings for each pipe size, alloy, and wall thickness
  • Inspect weld interiors with a borescope (a thin camera on a flexible cable)
  • Log weld records, gas readings, and joint numbers for code and audit traceability
  • Follow strict cleanroom gowning and handling rules to keep particles out

A day in the life

  1. Gown up for the cleanroom and review the weld map and job specs
  2. Wipe down, cut, and face pipe ends, then set up inert gas purging
  3. Run orbital welds joint by joint, watching gas flow and arc readings
  4. Hand-weld awkward fittings with GTAW where the machine cannot reach
  5. Borescope each weld interior, mark passes and fails, and reweld rejects
  6. Log every joint, update the weld map, and hand records to the inspector

Tools you will use

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Welding-school certificate with high-purity or orbital welding training
  • Apprenticeship in pipefitting or welding with a cleanroom contractor
  • Technical college diploma in welding technology or industrial piping
  • On-the-job training plus manufacturer courses on orbital weld systems

How people get their first job

  • In the US, finish a welding school and earn AWS or ASME welding qualifications
  • In the UK and EU, join a welding apprenticeship and qualify under EN ISO 9606
  • Start as a GTAW pipe welder, then train onto orbital weld systems on the job
  • Take a manufacturer course on orbital welding heads and high-purity purging
  • Build a photo portfolio of clean GTAW practice welds with borescope shots
  • Apply to semiconductor fab or biotech plant build-outs hiring purity welders
