What a Sheet Metal Worker does

Fabricates and installs sheet metal parts for buildings and equipment so systems like ducts and roofs fit, seal, and work safely.

  • Read drawings and job specs to plan sheet metal layouts and measurements
  • Measure, mark, and cut sheet metal using hand tools and shop machines
  • Form and assemble parts like ducts, flashing, and panels using brakes and fasteners
  • Install sheet metal systems on site and connect to HVAC or other building systems
  • Seal joints and test for fit, airflow, leaks, and vibration where needed
  • Coordinate with other trades to avoid clashes and keep work on schedule
  • Follow safety rules for heights, sharp edges, power tools, and lifting
  • Maintain tools, organize materials, and document changes from the plan

A day in the life

  1. Review the plan, safety notes, and material list before starting work
  2. Fabricate parts in a shop, then load and transport them to the job site
  3. Install and seal sections, checking alignment and clearances as you go
  4. Talk with supervisors and other trades to solve fit issues and update the plan
  5. Clean up the area, store tools, and note what is needed for tomorrow
