Day 1 on the CNC Operator path.

What a CNC Operator does

Operates CNC machines to make accurate parts for manufacturing by loading materials, running programs, and checking measurements.

  • Read job travelers, drawings, and setup sheets to understand part requirements
  • Set up CNC machines with the right tools, fixtures, and work offsets
  • Load raw material, start cycles, and monitor the machine during cutting
  • Measure parts with gauges and adjust offsets to keep parts within tolerance
  • Change worn tools and handle basic machine issues to reduce downtime
  • Record inspection results and production counts for traceability
  • Follow safety rules and keep the work area clean and organized

A day in the life

  1. Review the schedule, gather tools, and confirm the correct program and material
  2. Set up the machine, run a first piece, and get it checked before full production
  3. Run parts in batches, measuring key features and adjusting offsets as needed
  4. Swap tools, clear chips, and troubleshoot alarms with a technician when needed
  5. Log results, label parts, and hand off completed work to the next step

Tools you will use
