Day 1 on the Boilermaker path.

What a Boilermaker does

Build, install, and repair boilers and large tanks so plants and buildings can run safely and reliably.

  • Read drawings and job plans to understand layouts, materials, and safety steps
  • Measure, cut, and shape metal plate and pipe for boilers, tanks, and pressure parts
  • Fit up parts using clamps and alignment tools before welding or bolting
  • Weld, bolt, and seal sections to meet strength and leak-tight requirements
  • Inspect joints and surfaces for defects, corrosion, and wear during repairs
  • Test systems for leaks and pressure, and document results for quality and safety
  • Coordinate lifts and rigging to move heavy sections into place safely
  • Follow lockout and confined-space rules and keep the work area clean and safe

A day in the life

  1. Start with a safety briefing, review the plan, and check permits and hazards
  2. Set up tools, rigging, and access, then prep metal by cleaning and beveling edges
  3. Fit and weld or bolt sections, checking alignment and measurements as you go
  4. Work with inspectors and teammates to test, fix issues, and sign off the job
  5. End by cleaning up, storing gear, and logging work completed and materials used
