Day 1 on the Metrology Technician path.

What a Metrology Technician does

Measures and verifies parts and tools for production teams so products meet tight size and quality requirements.

  • Measure parts using precision tools to confirm size, shape, and surface requirements
  • Set up and run CMM programs to inspect complex features and record results
  • Calibrate and check gauges and fixtures to keep measurements trustworthy
  • Review drawings and tolerances to choose the right measurement method
  • Investigate out-of-spec results and help find root causes with production teams
  • Document inspection results and maintain traceable measurement records
  • Support audits by showing calibration status, procedures, and evidence

A day in the life

  1. Review the inspection queue and prioritize urgent production or customer issues
  2. Measure parts, log results, and flag any trends that suggest process drift
  3. Calibrate or verify gauges, then label and update the calibration records
  4. Meet with machining and quality teams to troubleshoot out-of-spec findings
  5. Wrap up by reporting results and preparing fixtures and programs for tomorrow

Tools you will use

Precision hand tools: calipers, micrometers, height gaugesCMM systems: coordinate measuring machines, probing routinesOptical measurement: vision systems, comparatorsSurface checks: surface roughness testers, profilometersCalibration standards: gauge blocks, reference artifactsQuality methods: SPC charts, control plansDocumentation: inspection reports, calibration logs
