Day 1 on the CNC Programmer path.

What a CNC Programmer does

Creates CNC machine programs and setups so factories can make parts that meet drawings, quality rules, and delivery needs.

  • Interpret part drawings, tolerances, and material specs to plan machining steps
  • Write and edit CNC programs for milling and turning using CAM or manual code
  • Select tools, holders, and cutting data to balance speed, finish, and tool life
  • Set up workholding, offsets, and zero points to run parts safely and repeatably
  • Simulate and prove out programs, then adjust feeds, speeds, and toolpaths
  • Inspect first articles and troubleshoot issues like chatter, burrs, and size errors
  • Document setups and program revisions so others can run jobs consistently

A day in the life

  1. Review the job packet, drawing, and due dates; plan tools and setups
  2. Program in CAM, simulate, then post code and load it to the machine
  3. Do a first-run prove out with an operator; tweak offsets and cutting data
  4. Measure parts, record results, and update setup sheets for the next shift

Tools you will use

CAM software: Fusion 360, Mastercam, SolidCAMCNC controls: Fanuc, Haas, SiemensMeasuring tools: calipers, micrometers, height gaugeInspection: CMM, surface plateCAD viewers: STEP, DXFWorkholding: vises, chucks, fixtures

  • Apprenticeship or paid trainee program in machining
  • Certificate courses in CAD, CAM, and CNC setup
  • Mechanical engineering technology diploma with machining focus

How people get their first job

  • Start as CNC operator and learn setups, offsets, and basic edits on the control
  • Apply for machining apprenticeship roles and log supervised shop hours
  • Build a small portfolio: 3 to 5 CAM toolpaths with setup sheets and inspection notes
  • Earn an entry CNC or metrology certificate from a training provider
  • Volunteer for first-article inspections and program prove-outs to learn faster
