Day 1 on the Machinist path.

What a Machinist does

Makes precise metal or plastic parts for products by setting up and running machine tools and checking quality.

  • Read drawings and job sheets to understand part size, shape, and finish
  • Plan the machining steps and choose tools, speeds, and feeds
  • Set up lathes, mills, or CNC machines and load materials safely
  • Run test cuts, measure results, and adjust offsets to hit tolerances
  • Inspect finished parts with gauges and record quality checks
  • Maintain tools and machines by cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn parts
  • Troubleshoot issues like chatter, tool wear, or out-of-spec dimensions

A day in the life

  1. Review the work queue, drawings, and tolerances; confirm material and tooling
  2. Set up a machine, run a first piece, then measure and fine-tune settings
  3. Run production parts, monitor tool wear, and keep chips and coolant under control
  4. Log measurements, label parts, and communicate issues to the team or supervisor

Tools you will use

Machine tools: lathe, milling machine, drill pressCNC controls: G-code, offsets, tool librariesMeasuring tools: calipers, micrometers, dial indicatorsInspection tools: height gauge, gauge pins, surface plateCutting tools: end mills, inserts, drillsWorkholding: vises, chucks, fixturesCoolant and chip control: coolant systems, chip conveyors

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Apprenticeship in machining or toolmaking with paid on-the-job training
  • Technical college or vocational diploma in machining or manufacturing
  • Certificate program in CNC machining and metrology
  • Workplace training route starting as a shop helper and progressing with mentoring

How people get their first job

  • Apply for machining apprenticeships at local manufacturers or repair shops
  • Start as a machine operator or shop helper and learn setups and measurement
  • Take a short CNC and measurement course and earn a basic safety certificate
  • Build a small portfolio: photos, setup notes, and inspection results for sample parts
  • Ask to shadow a machinist and practice reading drawings and using calipers
