Day 1 on the Veterinarian path.

What a Veterinarian does

Examine animal patients, diagnose health problems, and treat them with medicines, surgery, and preventive care while guiding the owners or farmers who look after them. The patients are pets, farm livestock, and sometimes wildlife, not people. This is a licensed clinical profession, and the veterinary degree and licence vary by country, such as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in the US, and a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS) in the UK, India, and others.

  • Examine animals to find injury, illness, and pain they cannot describe
  • Diagnose disease using exams, blood tests, X-rays, and scans
  • Perform surgery, dentistry, and procedures on pets and livestock
  • Prescribe medicines, vaccines, and parasite control suited to each species
  • Guide owners and farmers on feeding, hygiene, and preventive care
  • Support end-of-life care and humane euthanasia when treatment cannot help
  • Watch for animal diseases that can spread to humans and herds
  • Record diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up plans in patient files

A day in the life

  1. Review the day's appointments, surgeries, and any overnight inpatient cases
  2. See pets in turn for check-ups, vaccines, and sick visits
  3. Examine each animal, run tests, and explain findings to the owner
  4. Operate or treat under anaesthetic while a veterinary nurse assists
  5. Visit a farm or stable to check livestock health and herd records
  6. Finish by writing notes, calling owners with results, and planning recalls
