What a Medical Laboratory Technologist does

Performs and checks lab tests on patient samples so clinicians can diagnose illness and track treatment safely.

  • Collect, label, and prepare blood and other samples for testing
  • Run routine and specialized tests using lab analyzers and manual methods
  • Verify results, spot errors, and repeat tests when results look unusual
  • Maintain quality control checks and document test performance
  • Follow biosafety rules to handle infectious materials and dispose of waste
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment and troubleshoot basic instrument issues
  • Report critical results quickly and communicate with clinical teams

A day in the life

  1. Start shift with instrument checks, quality controls, and reviewing pending samples
  2. Process samples, run tests, and validate results in the lab computer system
  3. Handle urgent requests, call critical values, and answer clinician questions
  4. Restock supplies, clean work areas, and document issues for the next shift
