Day 1 on the Clinical Informatics Nurse path.

What a Clinical Informatics Nurse does

Works as a registered nurse who connects bedside care with health technology. Shapes how the electronic health record (EHR) and clinical AI tools work on the ward, trains staff, and checks that the tools truly help patient care and safety.

  • Configure how the electronic health record (EHR) shows orders, alerts, and notes
  • Map clinical workflows so the system fits how nurses really work
  • Test new clinical AI tools and check that suggestions are safe
  • Train nurses and doctors to use the system and new features
  • Collect feedback from wards and turn it into clear fix requests
  • Sit between clinical teams and the information technology and vendor teams
  • Check documentation and alerts to reduce errors and wasted clicks
  • Track safety events linked to the system and follow them up

A day in the life

  1. Start by reviewing overnight system tickets and any safety reports
  2. Walk the ward to watch how nurses use the record
  3. Meet the information technology team to plan a workflow fix
  4. Test a new alert in a practice system before it goes live
  5. Train a small group on a changed documentation screen
  6. Log feedback, update the change list, and hand over open items

Tools you will use

Patient records: Epic, Cerner, MEDITECH, other EHR systemsClinical AI tools: early-warning scores, sepsis alerts, note assistantsWorkflow mapping: flowcharts, process maps, VisioIssue tracking: ticketing tools, change request logsReporting: dashboards, Excel, basic SQL queriesTraining: slide decks, quick guides, practice (test) systems
