What a Nurse does

Provides hands-on care to patients in clinics and hospitals by monitoring health, giving treatments, and teaching self-care to support recovery and safety.

  • Assess patients by checking symptoms, vital signs, and medical history
  • Administer medicines, fluids, and treatments as ordered by clinicians
  • Monitor changes in condition and respond quickly to urgent issues
  • Coordinate care with doctors, therapists, labs, and family caregivers
  • Educate patients on medications, wound care, diet, and follow-up plans
  • Document care accurately in patient records and hand over to the next shift
  • Support infection control and safe use of equipment and supplies

A day in the life

  1. Start shift with handover, review patient plans, and set priorities
  2. Do rounds: check vitals, give meds, change dressings, and answer questions
  3. Coordinate tests and discharges, and update families and the care team
  4. Handle unexpected changes, escalate concerns, and support emergencies
  5. Finish with documentation and a clear handoff to the next shift
