Day 1 on the Dentist path.

What a Dentist does

Examine teeth, gums, and the mouth, diagnose problems, and treat them with cleanings, fillings, extractions, and crowns while coaching patients on prevention. This is a licensed clinical profession, and the dental degree and license vary by country, such as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) in the US, and a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in the UK and India.

  • Examine teeth, gums, and the mouth to find problems early
  • Diagnose decay, gum disease, and infections using exams and X-rays
  • Treat cavities with fillings and replace lost tooth structure with crowns
  • Remove damaged teeth and manage pain and infection safely
  • Coach patients on brushing, flossing, diet, and preventive care
  • Numb areas with local anaesthetic before doing painful procedures
  • Refer complex cases to specialists like orthodontists or oral surgeons
  • Record findings, treatments, and follow-up plans in patient charts

A day in the life

  1. Review the day's schedule, patient charts, and any urgent cases first
  2. See patients in turn for exams, cleanings, fillings, and check-ups
  3. Explain findings, show X-rays, and agree treatment plans with each patient
  4. Numb, drill, fill, or extract while a dental assistant supports
  5. Brief the hygienist and assistant, then reset rooms between patients
  6. Finish by writing notes, ordering lab work, and planning recalls
