What a Pharmacist does

Ensure medicines are safe and effective by checking prescriptions, dispensing drugs, and advising patients and care teams.

  • Review prescriptions for correct dose, interactions, allergies, and duplications
  • Dispense medicines accurately and label them with clear patient instructions
  • Counsel patients on how to take medicines and what side effects to watch for
  • Contact prescribers to clarify orders and suggest safer or cheaper alternatives
  • Monitor high-risk medicines and support medication therapy management
  • Give vaccines and basic health screenings where allowed by local rules
  • Maintain controlled drug records and follow safety and privacy regulations
  • Manage inventory, storage conditions, and expiry dates to prevent shortages

A day in the life

  1. Start by checking new prescriptions, insurance issues, and urgent patient needs
  2. Fill and verify orders, then counsel patients at pickup or by phone
  3. Handle calls with clinics about dose changes, refills, and interactions
  4. Do stock checks, controlled drug counts, and fridge temperature logs
  5. End by resolving pending problems and documenting interventions
