What a Mental Health Counselor does

Helps people improve mental wellbeing by providing therapy, coping skills, and support plans for daily life.

  • Assess client needs through interviews, screening tools, and goal setting
  • Provide individual, group, or family counseling sessions
  • Teach coping skills for stress, anxiety, mood, and relationship challenges
  • Create treatment plans and track progress over time
  • Coordinate care with doctors, schools, and community services when needed
  • Document sessions clearly and follow privacy and safety rules
  • Support clients in crisis with safety planning and referrals

A day in the life

  1. Review schedule and notes, then prepare goals for each session
