Day 1 on the Physician Assistant path.

What a Physician Assistant does

Examine patients, order tests, and prescribe treatment as part of a doctor-led team, so more people get timely care. The title and scope vary by country: Physician Assistant in the US, Physician Associate in the UK, with what you may prescribe set by local law.

  • Take patient histories and perform physical exams to assess problems
  • Order and interpret lab tests and imaging to guide care
  • Diagnose common conditions and create treatment plans with the supervising doctor
  • Prescribe medicines and adjust doses where local rules allow
  • Assist in surgery, suture wounds, and perform minor bedside procedures
  • Explain diagnoses, risks, and next steps so patients understand their choices
  • Refer complex cases to specialists and coordinate follow-up care
  • Document each visit, order, and prescription in medical records

  2. See patients back to back: examine, decide, treat, and document
  3. Check findings with the supervising doctor on tricky or unclear cases

  5. Finish charts, refill requests, and referrals before handing over
