What a Radiographer does

Captures medical images for patients using scanning equipment, helping clinicians diagnose and plan treatment safely.

  • Prepare patients by explaining the scan and checking identity and consent
  • Position patients and set up imaging equipment to capture clear diagnostic images
  • Follow radiation safety rules to protect patients, staff, and the public
  • Adjust scan settings based on the exam request and patient needs
  • Monitor patients during scans and respond to discomfort or urgent changes
  • Review image quality and repeat or add views when needed
  • Document procedures and share results with the clinical team and radiologists
  • Maintain equipment readiness by running checks and reporting faults

A day in the life

  1. Review the scan list, safety notes, and special instructions for each patient
  2. Bring patients in, confirm details, position them, and run the scan
  3. Check images for quality, label correctly, and send to the reading system
  4. Coordinate with nurses and doctors for urgent cases and patient support
  5. Clean and reset rooms, restock supplies, and log equipment issues
