What a Surveying Technician does

Measures land and site features for surveyors and project teams so maps, boundaries, and construction layouts are accurate.

  • Set up survey equipment and check it is level and calibrated
  • Collect field measurements for distances, angles, and elevations
  • Mark points and lines on the ground for construction layout
  • Record notes and photos to document site conditions and obstacles
  • Download and organize field data for mapping and reports
  • Assist with boundary and topographic surveys under a surveyor plan
  • Maintain equipment, batteries, and safety gear for field work

A day in the life

  1. Review the plan, safety risks, and control points before heading to site
  2. Set up tripod and receiver, then measure points across the area
  3. Flag stakes and paint marks where crews need lines and offsets
  4. Return to the office to upload data and fix missing or unclear points
  5. Brief the surveyor on results, issues, and what to recheck tomorrow
