What a Mason does

Builds and repairs brick, block, and stone structures on construction sites so buildings are strong, level, and weather-resistant.

  • Read plans and measure layouts for walls, corners, and openings
  • Mix mortar or grout and choose the right materials for the job
  • Build walls and structures using brick, stone, or concrete block
  • Cut, shape, and fit units using hand and power tools
  • Set lines, levels, and plumb guides to keep work straight and true
  • Repair damaged masonry by repointing joints and replacing units
  • Install reinforcement, anchors, and moisture barriers when required
  • Follow safety rules and keep the work area clean and organized

A day in the life

  1. Review drawings, confirm measurements, and plan the day with the crew
  2. Set up tools, mix mortar, and stage materials close to the work area
  3. Lay courses, check level and plumb often, and adjust as needed
  4. Coordinate with other trades around openings, scaffolds, and deliveries
  5. Clean tools, protect fresh work, and note progress for the next shift
