Day 1 on the Data Centre Mechanical Fitter path.

What a Data Centre Mechanical Fitter does

Installs and tests the pipework, pumps, and cooling units that keep data centre servers from overheating. The boom in AI computing means very large ("hyperscale") data centres are being built fast, and they need skilled fitters to deliver the cooling systems.

  • Install chilled water pipework, valves, and pumps from mechanical drawings
  • Fit cooling units like CRAC units (computer room air conditioners) into server halls
  • Measure, cut, weld, and join steel and plastic pipe runs very precisely
  • Mount supports, brackets, and hangers for heavy pipe and equipment
  • Pressure test pipe systems to find leaks before they go live
  • Flush and clean pipework so debris never reaches sensitive cooling equipment
  • Support start-up ("commissioning") teams as systems are filled, balanced, and switched on
  • Follow strict site safety, permit, and quality rules on live construction sites

A day in the life

  1. Attend the morning site briefing covering tasks, permits, and safety hazards
  2. Check drawings and mark out pipe routes in the plant room or server hall
  3. Cut, fit, and join pipe sections, then bolt up valves and pump connections
  4. Pressure test a completed section and record the results for quality sign-off
  5. Coordinate with electricians and ductwork crews sharing the same ceiling space
  6. Tidy the work area, update progress notes, and plan materials for tomorrow

Tools you will use

Hand tools: pipe wrenches, spanners, torque wrench, levelsCutting/joining: pipe cutters, threading machine, welding set, press-fit toolsLifting gear: chain blocks, slings, pipe stands, material trolleysTesting equipment: pressure test pump, gauges, leak detection sprayMeasuring tools: tape measure, laser level, laser distance meterDrawings/records: mechanical drawings, isometrics, test sheetsSafety gear: hard hat, harness, gloves, safety glasses

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Apprenticeship in pipefitting, plumbing, or mechanical building services
  • Trade school or vocational certificate in welding or pipe fitting
  • Technical college diploma in mechanical or building services engineering
  • On-the-job training with short courses in site safety and pressure testing

How people get their first job

  • Apply for a pipefitting or mechanical apprenticeship with a building services contractor
  • Start as a mechanical trades helper or mate on a large construction site
  • Earn basic site safety cards and working-at-height training required for site access
  • Practice welding and pipe joining at a trade school and photograph your test pieces
  • Ask contractors working on data centre projects about trainee and improver roles
