Day 1 on the Retrofit Insulation Installer path.

What a Retrofit Insulation Installer does

Installs insulation in existing homes and buildings so they lose less heat, cost less to run, and stay free of damp. Demand is growing fast under UK and EU energy schemes, and the work must meet tight retrofit standards (rules for upgrading existing buildings).

  • Survey lofts, walls, and floors to plan the right insulation approach
  • Install loft insulation, cavity wall fill (filling the gap inside double walls), and internal or external wall systems
  • Cut, fit, and seal insulation boards and rolls around pipes, wires, and joists (wooden beams)
  • Check ventilation and moisture risk so insulated homes do not grow damp or mould
  • Follow retrofit standards like PAS 2030 (a UK quality standard for energy upgrades)
  • Seal air leaks around windows, doors, lofts, and service holes
  • Record measurements, photos, and materials used as evidence for government scheme funding
  • Explain the work and aftercare to homeowners in plain language

A day in the life

  1. Check the job pack, survey notes, and materials before leaving the depot
  2. Protect the home, set up access, and confirm the install plan on site
  3. Fit insulation carefully, keeping vents clear and sealing gaps as specified
  4. Photograph each stage and log measurements for the quality record
  5. Walk the homeowner through the finished work and ventilation advice
  6. Tidy the site, restock the van, and report progress to the supervisor
