What a Plumber does

Installs, repairs, and maintains water and drainage systems for homes and businesses so buildings stay safe, dry, and usable.

  • Inspect plumbing systems to find leaks, clogs, low pressure, and faulty fixtures
  • Install pipes, valves, fixtures, and water heaters in new builds and renovations
  • Repair or replace broken pipes, taps, toilets, pumps, and drainage parts
  • Clear blockages using safe methods and confirm proper flow and venting
  • Read plans and measure, cut, and join pipe runs to fit tight spaces
  • Test systems for leaks and pressure, and document work completed
  • Explain issues, options, costs, and basic maintenance to customers
  • Follow safety rules and local codes to prevent water damage and health risks

A day in the life

  1. Review job list, load parts, and plan the route for service calls
  2. Diagnose the problem on site, then repair or install and test for leaks
  3. Talk with customers or site managers about timing, costs, and next steps
  4. Order parts, update job notes, and clean up the work area before leaving
