What a Carpenter does

Build, install, and repair wood and mixed-material parts of buildings for clients so spaces are safe, strong, and finished well.

  • Read plans and measure spaces to plan cuts, layouts, and material needs
  • Build and install framing, floors, walls, roofs, and structural supports
  • Fit and install doors, windows, cabinets, trim, and other finish carpentry
  • Use power and hand tools to cut, shape, fasten, and assemble materials
  • Repair damaged woodwork and replace parts to restore strength and function
  • Work with other trades to keep the build on schedule and avoid rework
  • Follow safety rules and keep the site clean, organized, and hazard-free

A day in the life

  1. Review the plan, confirm measurements, and set up tools and materials
  2. Cut and assemble parts, then install and check level, plumb, and square
  3. Coordinate with the site lead and other trades to avoid clashes in work
  4. Clean up, store tools, and note what materials and tasks are next
