What a Construction Equipment Operator does

Operates heavy machines on construction sites to move earth and materials safely, accurately, and on schedule.

  • Inspect equipment before use and report faults or safety risks
  • Operate excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, or cranes to move materials
  • Read site plans and follow grade stakes, markers, and supervisor directions
  • Dig trenches, level ground, and prepare foundations and roadbeds
  • Load and unload trucks and place materials where crews need them
  • Coordinate movements with spotters and nearby workers to avoid hazards
  • Perform basic maintenance like greasing, cleaning, and fluid checks
