Prepares surfaces and applies paint, wallpaper, and finishes for homes and buildings to protect materials and improve how spaces look.

  • Inspect walls, ceilings, and woodwork to plan prep and estimate materials
  • Protect areas with masking and coverings to keep sites clean and safe
  • Prepare surfaces by cleaning, sanding, scraping, filling, and priming
  • Mix and match colors and finishes to meet the desired look
  • Apply paint, stain, varnish, or coatings using brushes, rollers, or sprayers
  • Hang wallpaper or decorative coverings and trim edges neatly
  • Repair minor surface damage like cracks, holes, and water stains
  • Clean up tools, dispose of waste safely, and review work with the client

A day in the life

  1. Review the job plan, check surfaces, and confirm colors and finish with the client
  2. Set up ladders, cover floors, and prep surfaces before any painting starts
  3. Paint or spray in sections, checking edges, drips, and coverage as you go
  4. Let coats dry, do touch-ups, and tidy the site before leaving
