What a Quality Control Inspector does

Checks parts and finished products against specs, records results, and flags defects so teams can fix issues and ship safe, consistent quality.

  • Inspect incoming materials and finished goods against drawings and specs
  • Measure dimensions using gauges, calipers, micrometers, and templates
  • Run visual checks for damage, surface flaws, and assembly issues
  • Record inspection results and create clear defect reports with evidence
  • Decide pass or fail and tag, quarantine, or release items per procedure
  • Work with production to trace root causes and prevent repeat defects
  • Verify calibration status of measuring tools and report out-of-tolerance tools
  • Follow safety and quality standards and support internal audits

A day in the life

  1. Review the inspection plan, priorities, and any customer quality alerts
  2. Inspect batches on the line, measure key features, and log results
  3. Stop and escalate when defects appear, then recheck after adjustments
  4. Update reports, file samples, and hand off issues to production and engineering
