What a Forklift Operator does

Operates forklifts to move, load, and store goods for warehouses and yards, keeping people safe and orders on track.

  • Inspect forklifts before shifts and report safety or maintenance issues
  • Move pallets and materials to staging, storage, and shipping areas
  • Load and unload trucks and containers using safe lifting practices
  • Follow pick lists and loading plans to build accurate shipments
  • Scan, label, and record moves in inventory or warehouse systems
  • Secure loads and stack goods to prevent damage and tip-overs
  • Communicate with supervisors and teammates about priorities and hazards

A day in the life

  1. Start with a safety check, review the work queue, and plan travel routes
  2. Unload inbound deliveries, verify counts, and put stock into locations
  3. Pick and stage outbound orders, then load trucks to the schedule
  4. Do quick updates in the system and report damage, delays, or near-misses
