Day 1 on the Battery and EV High-Voltage Specialist path.

What a Battery and EV High-Voltage Specialist does

Diagnoses and services the high-voltage (HV) battery packs and powertrains in electric vehicles (EVs) so they run safely and reliably. It is a licensed trade. The HV safety certificates differ by country: UK IMI Level 3/4 EV awards, or US ASE xEV and OSHA HV training.

  • Diagnose faults in high-voltage (HV) battery packs, motors, and inverters
  • De-energize and isolate HV systems before any hands-on work
  • Test cells and modules for voltage, balance, and temperature
  • Replace or repair battery modules, connectors, and cooling parts
  • Read wiring diagrams, scan tool data, and battery health reports
  • Follow strict lockout rules and check insulation before touching parts
  • Document tests, repairs, and safety steps in service records

A day in the life

  1. Review the job list, confirm symptoms, and plan safe isolation steps
  2. Lock out and de-energize the high-voltage system, then verify it is safe
  3. Run diagnostics, test modules, and find the failing part
  4. Repair or swap parts, then re-energize and re-test the vehicle
  5. Coordinate with parts staff and advisors on timing and approvals
  6. Update records, clean the bay, and prep for the next vehicle
