Day 1 on the Materials Testing Technician path.

What a Materials Testing Technician does

Tests metals, plastics, concrete, and other materials for labs and production teams to confirm strength, safety, and quality before use.

  • Prepare samples by cutting, labeling, and conditioning to test standards
  • Run mechanical tests like tensile, hardness, impact, and fatigue
  • Perform basic chemical or corrosion checks using simple lab methods
  • Calibrate and verify test equipment before and after test runs
  • Record results, photos, and observations in logs and spreadsheets
  • Flag out-of-spec results and help investigate likely causes
  • Maintain a clean, safe lab area and handle materials correctly

A day in the life

  1. Review test requests, standards, and sample IDs for the day
  2. Set up fixtures, calibrate machines, and run scheduled tests
  3. Log data, check for errors, and repeat tests when needed
  4. Share results with quality and engineering and file reports

Tools you will use
