Day 1 on the Cobot Integration Technician path.

What a Cobot Integration Technician does

Installs, programs, and tunes collaborative robots (cobots), robot arms built to work safely next to people, on factory production lines. Sets up the arm and its gripper, teaches the motion path, and configures force and safety limits so the line runs fast and stays safe. Safety standards vary by country; one widely used example is ISO/TS 15066, a guide for safe human-robot work.

  • Mount the cobot and fit the end-effector (the gripper or tool at the arm tip)
  • Teach motion paths by guiding the arm or using the teach pendant
  • Set force, speed, and zone limits to keep nearby people safe
  • Run a risk assessment of the cell and fix any pinch or crush points
  • Configure safety functions to meet ISO/TS 15066 collaborative limits
  • Integrate the cobot with conveyors, sensors, and the line controller (PLC)
  • Test full cycles, tune grip and timing, and log the results

A day in the life

  1. Start with safety checks and review the install plan and cell layout
  2. Mount the arm, wire the tool, and bring power and signals up
  3. Teach paths, set force and safety zones, and run slow test cycles
  4. Walk the cell with the operator to spot pinch points and risks
  5. Tune grip, speed, and timing, then run a full production trial
  6. Update the risk file, write handover notes, and train the operator

Tools you will use

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Technical diploma in mechatronics, robotics, or industrial automation
  • Vocational training in electrical or mechanical maintenance
  • Apprenticeship in automation or industrial maintenance
  • Cobot vendor certificate, such as a Universal Robots training course
  • Short courses in PLCs, machine safety, and risk assessment

How people get their first job

  • Apply for automation or maintenance technician helper roles on a line
  • Take a free online cobot course and practice in a simulator
  • Earn safety training like lockout tagout and basic machine safety
  • In the US, look for automation apprenticeships or community college programs
  • In the UK, join an engineering or automation apprenticeship route
  • Build a portfolio: document one cobot setup with paths and safety notes
