Day 1 on the Mechanical Engineering Technician path.

What a Mechanical Engineering Technician does

Builds, tests, and measures mechanical parts and prototypes for engineers so products work safely and meet specs.

  • Build mechanical prototypes from drawings and instructions
  • Set up and run tests for strength, fit, motion, and durability
  • Measure parts using gauges and precision tools and record results
  • Troubleshoot test failures and suggest practical fixes to engineers
  • Maintain test rigs, tools, and lab or shop equipment
  • Create clear build notes, test reports, and change records
  • Support small-batch builds and help improve assembly steps

A day in the life

  1. Review drawings, test plans, and safety checks before starting work
  2. Build or modify a prototype, then set up sensors and fixtures
  3. Run tests, log measurements, and take photos of issues
  4. Meet with engineers to review results and agree next changes
  5. Update documentation and prep parts for the next test cycle

Tools you will use

CAD viewers: SolidWorks eDrawings, Autodesk ViewerMetrology tools: calipers, micrometers, dial indicatorsTest equipment: load frames, torque tools, vibration metersData capture: DAQ systems, digital sensorsDocumentation: Excel, Google SheetsHand tools: wrenches, drills, taps and dies
