What a Cargo Handler does

Move, sort, and secure goods in ports and warehouses so shipments are accurate, safe, and on time.

  • Load and unload cargo from trucks, containers, rail cars, or ships
  • Sort freight by destination, priority, and handling needs
  • Check labels, counts, and paperwork to match shipments
  • Inspect cargo for damage and report issues quickly
  • Use pallet jacks, forklifts, and straps to move and secure loads
  • Stack and store goods safely to prevent falls and crushing
  • Follow safety rules for heavy loads and hazardous materials
  • Keep work areas clean and clear to reduce accidents and delays

A day in the life

  1. Review the shift plan, dock schedule, and safety notes with the team
  2. Unload inbound freight, scan labels, and stage items by route
  3. Build pallets or loads, wrap and strap them, then move to outbound lanes
  4. Update counts and report damage, missing items, or delays to a supervisor
  5. End shift by cleaning the area and checking equipment for issues
